Principal Grassa’s Paw Prints (03/13/16)

Heshan Berents-Weeramuni

This week’s Paw Prints from Principal Katie Grassa:

  • Thank You: Thank you to all the families that raised money for the four Chromebook carts. They have arrived! We are working to get them all set up and into the hands of students by the end of this week! This would not be possible without the generosity of the SPC and we are lucky that you support our school! Thanks!
  • Into the Forest: Fairy Tales that Move Us! Be moved by this dance performance by grades K1 and K2 and PACE, Friday, March 18th at 9am in the Curley auditorium, under the direction of Ms. Taylor Knight. Refreshments and conversation will precede the performance.
  • Shout Out: Shout out to 6th grader, Elan Peng, who participated in the 2016 Boston Science Fair on March 4-5 on behalf of Curley and was chosen as a winner. Last week, Elan and her family went to the BPS Science Fair Awards Ceremony at the Bruce C. Bolling Building. Elan was announced the first place, together with six other winners in the middle school section of more than 150 teams/projects. Special thanks to Ms. Rodriguez for her support. Without her support Elan would not have had the opportunity to participate in the 2016 BPS Science Fair. You may find more information at http://bpsscience.weebly.com/citywide-science-fair-ma-region-vi.html. Way to go Elan!
  • Curley Alumni: We are thrilled to announce that two Curley Alumni have earned the prestigious Posse Scholarship. The Posse is a 27-year-old program that provides full scholarships to inner-city kids with extraordinary academic and leadership potential. Both of these students attending the Curley K-8 School and one is graduating from Brighton High School and the other from Boston Latin School. Congrats to both boys, their families and the Curley staff and community for supporting them along the way!
  • Girls on the Run: Girls on the Run will begin on Monday, March 14th.  There are 20 girls from grades 3-5 on the team.  Throughout the season, the girls make new friends, build their confidence and celebrate all that makes them unique.  In June the team will run a 5K at Boston College.  Practice will be held on the Curley playing field on Mondays and Thursdays from 3-4:15.  We ask that families play in other outdoor areas during this time.  Thank you!
  • Curley Lion Dance and Kung Fu Team: The Curley Lion Dance and Kung Fu team will be starting practice on Wednesdays 2:45 at the Pershing Road School Yard. The class will be pay by donation. The class is geared toward older children but everyone willing to follow along is welcome to do so. We will cover some basic meditation, stances for strengthening and flexibility, Kung Fu moves for self defense, Lion Dance, drumming, Tai Chi exercises for rest, relaxation and health, and we will also sing a Kung Fu song for the purpose of group dynamics and self affirmation. The short-term goal is to perform in the Wake Up the Earth Parade and to foster teamwork through practicing together and doing that parade together. The long-term goal is participate in performances as a stand alone team, as well as with other teams throughout Boston. The even longer-term goal is for students from this class to teach the younger children at the Curley what they have learned, and perhaps to teach other schools in the area as well. Please email Curley Parent, Adam Cheung (cheungfamilykungfu@gmail.com) with questions.
  • Hiring: We are looking for parents to help us with the interview process as we have many retirements, teachers leaving, new positions, and new teachers in provisional positions. Your voice is an important part in assuring we hire the best educators at our school. No prior experience is necessary. This is a great opportunity to get involved in the school and collaborate with teachers and administrators. Please email Katie Grassa (kgrassa@bostonpublicschools.org) if you are interested in helping any of these interview dates. We will also offer free daycare in CASP for those who need it.

  • Red Jacket Weekend 2016: Each year in September, City Year corps members and staff kick off their year of service with a large-scale service day benefiting a school in our communities. We are very excited to announce that next year, the Curley K-8 will be the host and beneficiary of this event. On a Saturday in September, around 750 volunteers from the City Year community will be coming out to the Curley and the surrounding community for a day of volunteering that will be organized by a specialized team from City Year. Projects for this type of event can include painting, murals, organization, landscaping, light construction and the creation of resources for students and teachers. Your input and feedback is essential for us to best align our projects with the needs of the school and we greatly appreciate you for taking the time to answer the questions using this link. Should you have any questions or want any additional information, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Maria Ploessl at mploessl@cityyear.org.
