Everything You Should Know About The Principal Search

Curley K-8 SPC

Yesterday morning a group of parents and teachers representing the teachers, School Site Council and School Parent Council met with Cheryl Watson-Harris, the network superintendent, to discuss the process of hiring the new Principal. Next week BPS will be doing Performative Assessments on the 47 applicants in the running for 20 principal slots. That process will produce 3-7 candidates to be considered for the Curley by the screening committee. The goal is to have a new Principal in place by mid June.

The purpose of this email is to inform the parent community about how parent representatives will be selected to serve on the screening committee:

As per the Superintendent’s circular, three (3) parents will be selected by the elected parent representatives on the School Site Council. These three (3) parents must be representative of our school’s racial and ethnic diversity and must include representation from Special Education or ELL. One (1) parent must be an elected parent representative of the School Site Council or School Parent Council. We feel strongly that one parent must be bilingual, Spanish-speaking. We also feel that there must be parents from both the lower and upper school.

Here is the commitment required:

  • Participate in a training on Thursday, May 2nd from 5:30pm-7:00pm at the Title 1 Training Center, 445 Warren Street, Dorchester, MA 02121.
  • Commit to being present at all interviews (meeting times will be determined by members of the selection committee).
  • Commit to attending two (2) community meetings – one morning and one evening – to communicate with the larger parent community and gather input.

Please also know that there will be other ways to have input, outside of being a voting member of the selection committee (there may be several non-voting members of the committee and will be two community meetings).

If you are interested in being a voting member of the committee, please email us directly by Tuesday, April 30th at 8pm. Please include a brief written explanation of why you would like to participate in this process and what makes you a good candidate.

Below is the Superintendent’s Circular. Please review if you are interested:
