As part of our year in review series called 2012/13 Paw Tracks, below is a recap of the Curley’s Science Fair organized by science teachers Stephanie Selznick and Jennifer Felicetti. Winners received their awards yesterday. The summary below is from Stephanie Selznick:

Everyone worked so hard on their projects this year and everyone did an original topic. I am so proud of them. Next year I would like to focus on an engineering fair where students come up with inventions. Please think about this for next year. Have a great 2 months off!
The winners of the elementary science fair were:
Grade 3

My heartiest congratulations to all the winners!
I would like to say that as a parent who has overseen 2 years of Science Fair projects at this school, I am completely perplexed as to why it takes 3-4 months for the results of the Curley Science Fair to be announced and medals awarded.
Am I missing something? Why aren’t the awards announced and medals presented the evening of the Science Fair itself. Judging happens during the day, correct? If the evening of the fair is not a possibility due to chaos, turnout or whatever, then why aren’t the results announced the following morning over the PA and awards given in the classrooms as the names are read?
It’s not that difficult to cut and paste each grade/class/student names into a spreadsheet (I have done this many times for many reasons during my time at the Curley) and automatically tabulate the scores. I’m absolutely certain that enough parent volunteers could be found to help with this if they knew it would make the difference between students finding out the results of the Science Fair the day of or next day over the kids waiting an eternity.
Please consider changing the status quo. My son went from gung-ho scientist in 3rd grade to disappointed & disinterested in 4th grade because of the delay in results last year (December Fair, April Awards) and this year it was even longer (February Fair, June Awards). If it’s a matter of having enough awards on hand prior to knowing the actual winners (solo/parters, or a tie), I’m certain the Parent Council or other means could be found to purchase enough medals to always have a small stock on hand “just in case”, again, especially if it means the students receive their awards in a timely manner, rather than waiting 3-4 months as they do now.
Many parents are happy to help with things like this, especially if you ask in advance!
Best Regards,
Sara
