Gentle Reminder For Drivers On Pershing Road

Curley K-8 SPC

Hello Curley School families,

This is a quick reminder that all vehicle traffic at morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up on Pershing Road must come to a complete stop and yield to school buses that have their red flashing lights on and stop signs out.

It is against the law to drive past any school bus that is loading and unloading students. This is the case whether the bus is out in street traffic or parked in front of a school.

The safety of our students is our first priority. Please be aware and take care when driving past the school.

Thank you.

Last night, the Principal Search Committee had the opportunity to hear how principal candidates will be chosen for the Curley. The process BPS uses is rigorous and thorough, and we are confident we’ll get great candidates. Next week, BPS will finish this screening, send us 5-7 people to interview, and we’ll begin our process. In advance of that, we want to get your input.

Please come to either general meeting on Monday May 6th at 8:45 am or 6:00 pm (childcare provided in the evening)  in the Upper School Library to voice your vision for the Curley and make sure the parent reps on the committee are well informed.

The committee consists of 3 teachers and 3 parents who best represent the different ages and diversity of our school and will have a vote in the ranking of the candidates:

  • Noreen Power (1st, 5th, and 6th grade; SPED PAC rep, parent)
  • Georgina Soto (1st grade parent )
  • Heshan Berents-Weeramuni (3rd & 5th grade parent)

  • Dan Barcan (K1 and 2nd grade parent)
  • Otis Williams (8th grade parent)
  • Sarah Silverstein (SAR teacher)

We will meet early next week to review the resumes and assessment results and will compile our list of questions to ask the candidates.

Over the next two weeks, the committee will be conducting interviews and we will rank the candidates and submit them to Dr. Carol Johnson by 5/17. She will make the final decision and we will hopefully have our new principal by the middle of June.

If you can’t make either of the meetings, please email one of your parent representatives with any questions or concerns by Monday, May 6:

Everything You Should Know About The Principal Search

Curley K-8 SPC

Yesterday morning a group of parents and teachers representing the teachers, School Site Council and School Parent Council met with Cheryl Watson-Harris, the network superintendent, to discuss the process of hiring the new Principal. Next week BPS will be doing Performative Assessments on the 47 applicants in the running for 20 principal slots. That process will produce 3-7 candidates to be considered for the Curley by the screening committee. The goal is to have a new Principal in place by mid June.

The purpose of this email is to inform the parent community about how parent representatives will be selected to serve on the screening committee:

As per the Superintendent’s circular, three (3) parents will be selected by the elected parent representatives on the School Site Council. These three (3) parents must be representative of our school’s racial and ethnic diversity and must include representation from Special Education or ELL. One (1) parent must be an elected parent representative of the School Site Council or School Parent Council. We feel strongly that one parent must be bilingual, Spanish-speaking. We also feel that there must be parents from both the lower and upper school.

Here is the commitment required:

  • Participate in a training on Thursday, May 2nd from 5:30pm-7:00pm at the Title 1 Training Center, 445 Warren Street, Dorchester, MA 02121.
  • Commit to being present at all interviews (meeting times will be determined by members of the selection committee).
  • Commit to attending two (2) community meetings – one morning and one evening – to communicate with the larger parent community and gather input.

Please also know that there will be other ways to have input, outside of being a voting member of the selection committee (there may be several non-voting members of the committee and will be two community meetings).

If you are interested in being a voting member of the committee, please email us directly by Tuesday, April 30th at 8pm. Please include a brief written explanation of why you would like to participate in this process and what makes you a good candidate.

Below is the Superintendent’s Circular. Please review if you are interested:

Principal Screening Process

Sincerely,

The SSC Parent Representatives
