Important information about school principal transition plan

Curley K-8 SPC

La version en Espanol vendra en el transcurso de esta semana!

Dear Curley parents, guardians, and families –

As many of you know, Principal Jeff Slater has accepted a new job at a school district outside San Francisco. His last day at the Curley is this coming Friday, April 12. We were happy to learn that former Curiey principal Mirna Vega Wilson has agreed to return to the school as interim principal for the remainder of this school year. Her decision to come back will help ensure continuity as students finish out the year.

With Jeff’s departure comes questions about what happens next. What is the process for finding a new principal? How long will it take? What role will students and families play in the selection process? These are all good questions, and as the school’s elected parent representatives, we are committed to finding the answers and sharing them with you all.

Immediately after the April vacation we will be meeting with Cheryl Watson-Harris, Academic Superintendent for the Boston Public Schools. There is a process in place – recently revamped – for selecting new principals in the BPS system, and she will be explaining it to us in detail. We want to be certain that EVERYONE understands exactly how they can and should be involved, and will work with Cheryl to ensure that the process and timeline are clear and that communication is ongoing.

This is a major transition for all of us, but we are optimistic that working together with BPS we will welcome a strong, effective new principal to our school in September. We will provide you all with an update after our meeting with Cheryl. In the meantime, feel free to contact any of us with questions or issues.

All the best,

Leah Barcan, Co-Chair, School Site Council

Jill Lazer, Co-Chair, School Site Council

Genevieve Day, Co-chair, School Parent Council

Dave Demerjian, Co-chair, School Parent Council

Jeff Slater Leaving the Curley K8

Genevieve Day

Dear Curley Community,

This week we learned that Curley K8 School principal Jeff Slater will be leaving us to start a new job in California. During his years at the Curley, Jeff has gone above and beyond to create a safe, supportive climate that fosters learning and positive interaction between students, parents, and teachers. He has made lasting contributions to the school, and he will be missed. We wish him well in his new job. Jeff’s formal letter announcing his resignation to the Curley community is pasted below and will be sent out to all families next week. As your parent representatives, both the SPC (Student Parent Council) and SSC (School Site Council) will be working with Cheryl Watson-Harris to implement the search for a new principal. We will continue to communicate with parents as we learn more about the process. For those of you who do not know Mirna Vega Wilson, we feel very lucky to have her (out of retirement!) and back at our school as our interim principal to finish out the year. Thanks, Mirna!

Dear Curley Family,

I hope this letter finds you well and that you are enjoying the beginning of beautiful springtime in New England. I am writing today to let you know I will be leaving the Curley during April vacation to take on a new leadership role in California. We are pleased to announce that Mirna Vega Wilson, former principal of the Curley, has agreed to provide interim leadership for the remainder of this school year.

Cheryl Watson-Harris, our network assistant superintendent, will be reaching out to the Curley school community in the near future to share the process of selecting a new school principal for the Curley. Cheryl’s office is located at the Curley and she can be reached via phone at 617-635-8239 or email at cwatson@boston.k12.ma.us should you have any questions in the meantime.

Our talented and dedicated teachers, staff, community partners, parents/guardians, and students have worked hard to make the Curley the outstanding place it is today. It has been a joy to serve with you in such a wonderful and fulfilling school setting, and I know every one of you has a bright future ahead.

Principal Slater’s Paw Prints (04/05/13)

Heshan Berents-Weeramuni

This week’s Paw Prints from Principal Jeff Slater:

  • Thank you to everyone for a hugely successful administration of the ELA portion of the MCAS. Our students (largely) arrived on time ready to go! They took the test seriously, and gave it their all!
  • We had our professional development session this Tuesday. Our teacher-led sessions focused on: Close reading, planning for intervention, looking as student work (LASW), and NAEYC accreditation. Special thanks to our facilitators: Kim Daly, Adrian Ward-Jackson, and Alissa Ferro.
  • Congratulations to our girls and boys basketball teams for making the playoffs! Well-done coaches!
  • Next Thursday I have the pleasure of having been asked to speak at Thompson Island’s annual gala at the Seaport Hotel. I’ll be bringing a small group of students with me as we share our experiences about visiting the island over the years, and the importance of supporting experiential learning. Thank you to Sue Trotz and Maria Monteiro-Roby for helping to coordinate this effort!
  • The sixth annual Curley K-8 Spring Art show is next Thursday, April 11th from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm. A huge thank you to our amazing arts team for putting together what is always a fantastic showcase of our students’ work every year!

  • Update on planning and fundraising for the Curley schoolyard initiative.
  • Quick overview of upcoming fundraisers and events, including the plant sale and annual solicitation letter.
