Principal Slater’s Paw Prints (10/26/12)

Heshan Berents-Weeramuni

This week’s Paw Prints from principal Jeff Slater:

  • Several of our amazing Curley teachers helped to facilitate learning sessions for our staff at Tuesday afternoon’s professional development session. Kim Daly did a session on “Number Talks,” Danielle Moran shared information about how to access and use predictive data from the online web site, Caitlyn Gable facilitated a session on grade level literacy resources, and Jaime Staraitis assisted district literacy coach Michele Carpinteri with the Secondary Core Model for English Language Arts and shifts in the Common Core Standards.
  • I had a great time hearing Craig Melzer reading “The Pearl” with his 8th graders. They were doing a great job finding evidence from the text and identifying figurative language, metaphors, and similes.
  • I was humbled by the dedication and sheer amount of hours given by Boston Cares volunteers. I was honored to accept Boston Cares Community Partnership Award on behalf of the school along with Curley parents Julie Smith-Bartoloni, Liza Sterns, and Rebecca Nieto.
  • One of our school priorities this year is Common Core Shifts: Rigorous Standards-Based Lesson Design. According to the new teacher evaluation rubric, a teacher who is proficient at curriculum and planning “Designs units of instruction with measurable outcomes and challenging tasks requiring higher-order thinking skills that enable students to earn the knowledge and skills defined in state standards/local curricula.”
  • I’m excited to be welcoming “Sole Train: Boston Runs Together” to our after school programming! This running and mentoring program will have our students running around Jamaica Pond twice a week as they train for half marathon in the spring. I’m looking forward to logging some miles with them! • I’m looking forward to ending the week with no embellished animal-related news stories!
