Curley Uniforms for SY 2013-14

Curley K-8 SPC

Thanks to everyone who voiced an opinion in our recent uniform survey.  Based on the survey results, the School Site Council has voted on Curley student attire for SY 2013-14, and Curley students will be expected to wear the following to school next year:

  • Navy, black, or khaki bottoms (pants, shorts, skirt, or jumper)
  • Black Curley t-shirts or collared shirts (light blue, plain white, or white with Curley logo)

The Parents’ Council and the School Site Council will work with school administration to ensure that students come to school wearing clothing that is consistent with this policy.  Our school community has clearly voiced a preference for uniforms and we will all need to work to ensure that families support compliance with this policy by making sure that their children dress appropriately.

Please note that families who wish to opt out of the uniform policy are legally entitled to do so.  To opt out, parents or guardians must inform the school in writing as to the reason why their child will not participate in uniform attire.  Opt out letters should be sent in at the beginning of the school year.

Results from the Uniform Survey

The Curley community is strongly in favor of a uniform policy for SY 2013-14.

  • Uniforms:  78.24%
  • No Uniforms: 21.76%

Parent Responses

  • Uniforms:  78.14%
  • No Uniforms:  21.86%

Teacher/Admin Responses

  • Uniforms:  81.82%
  • No Uniforms:  18.18%

All voters by grade/statusResponse Data

We received a total of 193 responses from teachers and from parents of students in every grade.  183 responses came from Curley parents, many of whom listed multiple children. Responses came from families with children in all grades, with 1st and 3rd grade families submitting the highest number of responses and the smallest number coming from K0 families (not a surprise, given the small number of K0 students).  As the bar chart below illustrates, the overall distribution is relatively even among grades K2-6, with a drop for 7th and 8th grades.

183 families represents less than 30% of our total school community so how can you state that we have ‘clearly’ voiced a preference for uniforms? How can a policy be mandated with less than 50% of the school community responding?

    Hi Marlyn,

Perhaps it would have been more accurate to say something like, “Of the families who chose to vote, there was a clear preference for uniforms.” All families were given to opportunity to vote via phone, paper, or online. All we can do is present the question; we cannot force people to actually vote on the policy if they choose not to do so.

    Hi there

We will be new to the Curley this year. In regards to the uniform shirts, am I correct in thinking that the light blue & plain white shirts mentioned DO NOT have to have the Curley logo on them?

That’s what it sounds like but just want to confirm.

    Thanks much!

Welcome Michelle! You’re right, the light blue and plain white shirts do not have Curley logos – they can be simple plain long or short sleeve polo shirts. The Curley logoed shirts (white and black) you can get through our Curley Shop page if you’re interested.

How is possible that a decision was made without every parents vote? How can the policy be mandated? Maybe many of the parent like me wish to not spend double the amount of money on clothes. And just because less 30% of the school parents made a decision is should not be consider a mandated policy.
