We Care About Music!

Heshan Berents-Weeramuni

Last week our Kindergarten welcomed five musicians from Chameleon Arts Ensemble to a morning of learning about the instruments of the orchestra as part of a musical Zoo.  They may look like they were just having fun, but check out this video to see what their brains were up to while they played!

Thank you to our parent volunteers; Jenny, Dave, Elizabeth, Shannon, Maria, and Annie, who spent two hours of their morning at the Zoo making sure everyone got their chance to try an instrument.  Want to know how truly amazing our community is?  Only half of the parent volunteers had children attending the Zoo!

Thank you to Mr. Cardoso (and his students) for their understanding when our pint-sized percussionists took over the hallway outside his classroom.  We are so grateful for your flexibility and understanding.

I would also like to thank all of our Kindergarten students and teachers for making the morning so successful.  Especially the K2 that hustled down early to start the Zoo even as late buses (and one of our musicians) were still arriving.  Our liaison from Chameleon commented on what a well behaved, attentive, and appreciative audience you all were, so we can be very proud of our youngest students and all of the Kindergarten staff that work with them.  Classroom compliment jars should be overflowing!

If your child came home begging to play the oboe or viola, not to worry.  Chameleon Arts will do another instrument petting zoo in May at the Hyde Park library with even MORE instruments to try out.  The event is free and details can be found on their website , be sure to thank them for covering the cost of our Zoo through their educational outreach program!   We are fortunate to live in a city FULL of music, with many programs designed to make it more affordable.  Please reach out to our Community Music teachers or parents of student musicians here at the school to find out what is available.   Want to hear these instruments in a full orchestra?  The Boston Symphony Orchestra does several family concerts annually with a musical petting zoo preceding their performances; children under 18 are free!

And a very special thanks to the older students that completed the “Zoo” sign outside Ms. Knight’s classroom to welcome the Kindergarten to their event.  It was such a nice surprise and your efforts did not go unnoticed as the musicians and students arrived at the Zoo.

A final thanks to Principal Grassa for her support of this event and Ms. Taylor Knight who’s upcoming Kindergarten dance performance inspired the Zoo.  Ms. Knight gave generously of her time, spirit, and classroom space to bring the Zoo to the Curley, so please let her know if you had fun.  Don’t forget to come see the Kindergarten (and invited special guests!) perform in “Make Way for Ducklings” on Friday, March 20th at 9 AM in the Upper School Auditorium.  Please contact parent Dana Willeke or Ms. Taylor-Knight if you can help with rehearsals, creating the set, or at the performance.
