Principal Grassa’s Paw Prints (9/11/2016)

Dave Hamilton

Kindergarten Starts!
Tomorrow is the first day of Kindergarten! We are excited to welcome our youngest students. For the first week of school teachers will meet families outside on Pershing Rd. Having parents remain outside on first week helps students to transition into their new school setting. Starting Monday, September 19th families can walk their child to class starting at 8:15am.

Health and Wellness
We are pleased to invite you to join the Health and Wellness Committee. Our first meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 13th from 7:30-8:15am. We will meet in the Guidance Office located in the Upper School, room 203. At this first meeting, we will introduce ourselves and review the purpose and general goals of the committee. Please come join us on Tuesday, and every first Tuesday of the month.

Positive Press
The Curley was featured in the Globe and on WBUR on Thursday. Check out the Globe. Check out WBUR.

Keep it Clean, Curley

Our new school climate campaign will align with Caring About Our School. Thanks to some Curley Families and the Playing Field Committee we have purchased 7 new trash barrels that are placed around the property. We will be teaching students about the importance of cleaning up litter as well as how to clean up after themselves. More information regarding this initiative will follow in the coming weeks.

Racism Panel
BPS is hosting a forum titled: Tackling Racism in the Boston Public Schools. This will take place at the Bruce C. Bolling Building from 5:30pm-8pm on Thursday, September 22nd. You can RSVP HERE.

T-Shirt Video
Last year Curley Art teachers in collaboration with our School Climate Team led an art competition to design a new Curley t-shirt for this school year. There were 936 submissions and only one winner! Congrats to Warren Yang in Grade 1 for being chosen and for helping us to create a new school shirt! Watch this video to see the student work submitted by our students and finalists.

A Note From Our Nurses
The Curley K-8 School is lucky to have two full time nurses on staff. Nurse Regan (mregan@bostonpublicschools.org) and Nurse Pumphret (apumphret@bostonpublicschools.org) are here to support our whole community. Please reach out to them if you have any health related questions about your child. Here is a note from our health services department in BPS.

Arrival and Dismissal
Please keep in mind that the doors open at 8:15am and the official school day begins promptly at 8:30am. Please make sure to have your child arrive on time for the start of the day. Dismissal begins at 2:25pm. We are asking all families to remain outside at dismissal and not to release their child from school after 1:45pm. All arrival and dismissal information is found here.

Kindergarten Welcome Picnic
hank you to the School Parent Council for all their support in organizing the picnic last week. It was a great way to start the year!

Open House
Our Open House for all families will take place on Thursday, September 22nd from 5pm-7pm. We hope all families can come out, meet the teachers and hear about what your child will learn this year!

Red Jacket Weekend
Join us for a family field day with City Year Boston on Saturday, September 17th from 1-4 PM! Activities will include face painting, games, a food demonstration by Fresh Truck, and more. All ages are welcome to attend, but children under 18 should be accompanied by an adult. Register HERE!

Paw Prints
Each Sunday I will send out the Paw Prints to the website. It is an opportunity to share information with our entire community.

The 10th Annual Curley K-8 Fall Fling
fallfling-01
This year our Fall Fling is Friday, October 14th from 5:30 – 8:00PM.
This is a fabulous family event and fundraiser with food, fun activities, a raffle with major prizes and a DJ! Parent volunteers play an essential role in making this a great event for our school community. Please see links below to sign up to volunteer. The money raised goes toward important enrichment programs such as music, art, dance and science for our children. We invite parents to a planning meeting on Wednesday, September 14th at 7:30 at Canary Square in Jamaica Plain. Read the full story HERE!

Curley Before and After School Program Welcome
Please contact, Torri Canada, the Director of the Curley Before and After School Program (CASP), for more information. You can also visit CASP’s webpage HERE. A CASP before school application must be on file on the first day of school for your child to attend. If you have not yet submitted a before school application you will be required to do so upon arrival with your child. Students attending CASP after school on the first day must have an application on file. Please let your child’s teacher know if they plan to attend CASP.

School Supplies for Grades 3, 4 , and 5 have arrived!
They are already in your child’s classroom. The Curley School wants its students to be prepared, and this year Curley has partnered with “You” to buy note books, binders and folders for grades 3, 4, and 5. If your child is attending grade 3, 4, or 5, please send $20.00 to their teacher to help pay for your child’s binders, note books, and folders. Give an extra $20.00 and sponsor another student’s supplies. Send cash or checks made to: Curley K-8 School. This is an exciting new initiative that saves “You” time and money. Teachers will still need additional supplies for their rooms, so please look for letters from your child’s teacher, and visit their DonorChoose Campaigns.
