Principal Grassa’s Paw Prints (1/3/2017)

Dave Hamilton

Happy New Year
Happy New Year to all Curley families and friends! We hope you all have a happy and healthy 2017 and we look forward to seeing everyone back at school tomorrow, January 4, 2017.

SSC
The SSC will meet on Wednesday, January 4th from 5:30pm-7:00pm in room 209. This meeting will be solely about the budget for SY 2017-2018. Our regular monthly meeting will be on Tuesday, January 10th from 5:30pm-7:00pm in room 209. All SSC meetings are open to staff and families. Please come and join us!

Principal Breakfast
Please join us on Friday, January 6th for the Principal Breakfast in Room 221. We will be discussing homework across the school and gathering ideas from families regarding changes in homework with adding 40 minutes to the school day.

Our Library & Technnology campaign raised over $22,000 so far! Please help us reach our goal of $25,000.
The School Parent Council and the Library/Technology Committee are asking for your support to ensure Curley students are well-prepared for the 21st century. A staffed, modern and well-stocked library is a key part of this vision. Our shared vision for the Curley Library includes both traditional and digital media: an updated collection of books to support our students’ literacy development and reading interests, and the technology and online resources to allow students to research, collaborate, and present information digitally. As 2016 comes to an end, please consider a tax-deductible donation in support of the Curley K-8’s Library and Technology Campaign. CLICK HERE to learn more.

New Health and Wellness Policy
The Curley K-8 Community has begun implementing a Celebration and Reward Policy focused on the health and wellness of our community. This policy uses tools for academic success to recognize important events, exceptional behavior and teamwork in place of food and candy. At the Curley K-8 the majority of celebrations (holidays, birthdays, end of school year etc.) will be recognized without food/candy in the classroom, please discuss with your student’s teacher how they will recognize birthdays. At the Curley K-8 exceptional behavior and/or teamwork will also be recognized without food/candy. This policy will be followed in afterschool, school sports/clubs etc., the one exception to this is the PACE program. Please click here for a detailed memo of this policy and thank you for your support to help take care of our community.

Curley Winter Gear Update
A big thank you to all those who have donated winter gear so far! It is much appreciated and being sent home with students every day. We still need more (coats, hats, mittens/gloves, boots, etc), especially as the days get colder. We can use all sizes, from 3t – adult. Donation boxes can be found in both the upper and lower school lobbies. If your child is in need of winter gear, please let his/her teacher know. Thanks for helping keep Curley kids warm this winter!

Lion King Performances
Ms. Taylor Knight was the recipient of a district-wide donation of shoes, tights and body suits, which will help costume the Lion King cast. Thanks to BPS Arts Department (Myron, Allyssa and Dawn) and the Boston Dance Alliance. The Lion King School Show performance dates have been announced:

  • March 21 at 9am and 1pm
  • March 22 at 9am
  • March 23 and 24th at 7pm (family show)
Families are welcome to come to either performance.

Snow
In preparation for the winter we would like to ask all families to talk with their children around throwing snow. We want all students to be safe as they enter and exit school and we are asking that all adults and students leave the snow on the ground during those times. We are also asking that families and students use the shoveled spaces to walk and do not walk through the snowy yard. This is to help assure that no one falls and gets hurt. Thank you!

Labeling Coats
We are asking families to label their child’s coat on the inside tag. This way if the coat gets lost we can return it to the rightful owner. We have had many winter coats end up in the lost & found and we want to prevent this from continuing.

School Previews
We are looking for family volunteers to support our upcoming School Previews. These are building tours for perspective families and Curley families help to lead and share information from a parent’s point of view. All families are welcome to participate and no prior experience is necessary (we will partner you up with others). The preview dates will take place on Friday, January 13th from 9am-1pm and Monday, January 23rd from 3pm-4pm. Please email Arusha Hollister (arusha_h@yahoo.com) if you Doodle Poll: Curley Preview Tours

ELT
BPS is returning to the idea of expanding the school day for our students in K-8. We will be adding 40 minutes to our day for school year 2017-2018. At this time we are in the planning phase and we do not have any information about school hours. We will update families as soon as we have concrete information. In the meantime if you have any idea or questions please reach out to our two parent ELT representatives Jess Curran (jessicacurran@ymail.com) and Ann DeGeorge (ann.c.degeorge@gmail.com).
