Heshan Berents-Weeramuni

  • Grade 4 Open House: We will host an open house for the families of all rising 4th graders (current 3rd graders) on February 29th from 9:30am-10:30am in the auditorium. This is a great opportunity to meet all of our 4th grade teachers, hear about the curriculum and see classrooms. We hope you can join us!
  • Health and Wellness: Join Us! Volunteers anted for K-8 Environmental Health Walk-through! The Curley Health and Wellness Committee will be conducting an Environmental Walk-through of the Curley K-8 in Jamaica Plain, MA on Tuesday, March 1st, 7:30-9:30am. We are looking for roughly 20-40 volunteers to participate in a survey of the environmental/health conditions at the school. Please sign up below or by using our digital signup at
    https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CurleyK8Walkthrough.
  • SPC: The March SPC Meeting will take place on Wednesday, March 2nd from 8:45am-10:45am in the Upper School Room 221. All families are encouraged to attend.
  • Uniform Survey: The SSC wants to hear from every family/staff member about their thoughts on uniforms at the Curley K-8 School. This is a yearly poll to gather information before the SSC votes on whether or not to have a uniform for next school year. Please take the time to complete this survey http://goo.gl/forms/YVgo87NEZy.
  • Curley Basketball Team: Our basketball season will begin this week with home games on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. The girls will play at 3:30pm and the boys will play at 4:30pm. Go Flying Lions!
  • Principal Breakfast: Please join us for the March Principal Breakfast in the Upper School Room 221. We will be discussing the Curley Instructional Focus and some budget updates for next year. All families are welcome.
  • 9th Annual Silent Auction: The 9th Annual Curley Silent Auction will take place on Tuesday, March 29th at Canary Square. Please save the date and join us for our largest fundraiser of the year. • Snow: Throughout the rest of the winter we would like to ask all families to speak with their children about throwing snow. We want all students to be safe as they enter and exit school and we are asking that all adults and students leave the snow on the ground during those times. We are also asking that families and students use the shoveled spaces to walk and do not walk through the snowy yard. This is to help assure that no one falls and gets hurt. Thank you!
  • Labeling Coats: We are asking families to label their child’s coat on the inside tag. This way if the coat gets lost we can return it to the rightful owner. We have had many winter coats end up in the lost & found and we want to prevent this from continuing.
  • Arrival: Please keep in mind that the doors open at 8:15am and the official school day begins promptly at 8:30am. Please make sure to have your child arrive on time for the start of the day. Families are welcome to accompany their child to the class each morning between 8:15-8:35. After 8:35am all students will be marked tardy and cannot be escorted by families members to class.
  • Dismissal: Dismissal begins at 2:25pm. We are asking all families to remain outside at dismissal. We are also asking families to not release students after 1:45pm. It makes for a hectic dismissal and is disruptive to classroom learning. Also to assure the safety of the 300+ students who participate in afterschool activities we will not be able to allow families back into the building to use the facilities after dismissal. There are not staff on duty to supervise this past 2:45pm.

CURLEY 9TH ANNUAL SILENT AUCTION – KICK OFF MTG 1/28 7-8 pm

We must raise $40,000 each year to keep these programs running. And we need your help to do it!

Some Happy BUDGET UPDATES for next year:
Budget season for Ms. Grassa and her team of staff and parents is almost over, but not yet finalized. However, a few great updates we can share are: We are definitely hiring a 2nd music teacher!, another lunch monitor, a teacher for the upper school and we are still hoping a Librarian!!! Librarian is contingent on finalizing the budget so we may not know for a bit, but if it happens, we will be bringing back our library for next year! A fun Summer project for parents to
enjoy!

TENACITY AFTER SCHOOL AT THE CURLEY (Spots available Now)
Tenacity tennis program after school at the Curley has a few spots available for 6th graders! It’s first come, first serve, so inquire soon if interested. SCHEDULE: 2:30-5:30 MON-THU (Curley gym) through the end of May/early June 2016 If your 6th grader is interested, please pick up an application in the Tenacity office on the 2nd floor of the Upper School.

BOOK DRIVE:
Please bring in your books for the book exchange (for all grades). At the end of the month you ay select a few to take back home. Boxes are in the upper and lower school entrances. For any questions or to help out, contact Kristin at: k_brennan2001@yahoo.com

COAT DRIVE:
The coat drive will be happening all winter. Please drop off anything and take what you/your family may need. *Smaller sized snow pants/boots/gloves are still needed. Racks are in both upper school and lower school.

UNIFORMS AT THE CURLEY for next year 2016/17:
Every year parents to start thinking about uniforms in our school. Families must weigh in and vote either PRO uniform or NO uniform for next school year (2016/17). There are plenty of opinions and arguments for both ways – start thinking about what you would like to see. The School Site Council (SSC) will be sending out a survey for each family to complete and return in the upcoming weeks (you may be able to vote online – TBD). The SSC NEEDS your feedback to
make this decision.

OUR 8th GRADERS NEED YOUR CREATIVITY AND SUPPORT:
A group of approximately forty-five (45) 8th graders are trying to put together an 8th grade trip to our Nation’s Capitol, Washington DC in the Spring. Teacher, Jesse Cardoso is spearheading this effort along with help from Ann DeGeorge, for fundraising. They need to raise $13,000 to make it happen. Trips like these are life changing for our students. Please let us know if you have ideas or ways you may be able to help. Contact Jesse at: Jcardoso@bostonpublicschools.org or Ann at: anncdegeorge@curleyk8.com. We just opened GoFundMePage as well: https://www.gofundme.com/Curley8thGradeTrip

THE BLISSFUL MONKEY YOGA STUDIO SUPPORTS THE CURLEY!:
We are so fortunate to have the support of The BlissfulMonkeyYogaStudio (on Centre Street in JP). They are holding a fundraiser for the Curley by way of attending yoga classes at their studio ALL WEEK.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT SUMMER CAMP REGISTRATION:
It’s that time of year… This is just a friendly reminder that now is the season to sign up for summer camps! It’s great to team up with other parents/students in your class to maybe carpool or just for fun! Or maybe a regular babysitting swap! Whatever you do, we just want to make sure you are prepared. Here are some of the common “Curley-kid” camps to consider: Boston Nature Center / Eliot School / YMCA / Roche Center / Zoo Camp / Kroc Center / MFA / Kids Art / Pine Village / Museum of Science / Hale Reservation / Summer STEM Program at Northeastern University: https://stem.neu.edu/summer/nussp/ and there are plenty other great camps! • Snow: In preparation for the winter we would like to ask all families to speak with their children about throwing snow.
  • School Showcase: Thank you to the families who volunteered time last year to help prospective families make informed choices about schools for their child next year. We have one more showcase session this Thursday, January 14th from 3-4pm. Please email Arusha Hollister if you are interested in helping out or sign up here.
