Next Tuesday: Potluck, Principal & Parents!

Curley K-8 SPC

Please join us on Tuesday, October 4 from 6:00-8:00pm in the Lower School cafeteria (and bring a dish or drink to share).  It’s time for a Curley community potluck dinner and our first parents’ council meeting of the year!

Principal Jeff Slater will to welcome new and returning Curley families and will talk about his vision for the Curley K-8. You’ll learn what the parents’ council does (the short answer is “A LOT!!”), find out how you can get involved, and help us choose this year’s parents’ council leaders. You can also find out about our School Site Council (“SSC”) (comprised of parents, teachers, and administrators), and we’ll elect our parent representatives to the SSC.

We welcome all participation – even if you haven’t had a chance to get involved before or are brand-new to the Curley!  As we hope you know by now, the Curley has a terrific, engaged parent community, and we look forward to your continued (or new!) participation this school year.  We have many very easy ways to get involved, and we also welcome parents who aren’t able to volunteer right now but are interested in learning more about the Curley.

Please bring a dish or drink to share.  Childcare and Spanish interpretation will be provided.

Curley Moms: MFABS is Tonight

Curley K-8 SPC

Hello Curley Mamas! A reminder that the 1st MFABS evening of the year (Mamas, Friendship and Beverages for Survival) is tonight.

Join us at Bella Luna/Milky Way at 7:30 pm  tonight for a casual evening of beverages and mama-ship. Arrive whenever you can (it’s a “soft” start-time), and leave whenever you need to.

In case you need your memory jogged, MFABS is a chance for mamas in the Curley K-8 community — and beyond — to get together for a drink and a chat. It’s just for fun; there are no dads, kids, or agendas other than to relax, vent, share, and otherwise take a load off our far-too-busy minds and souls.

PLEASE SHARE THIS INVITE with any moms who might enjoy a night out! For more information, contact Lindsey Weeramuni.

More Fall Fling Volunteers Needed. No, Really!!

Heshan Berents-Weeramuni

Fall Fling raffle sales outside JP Licks were brisk this weekend. The Curley parents and kids who volunteered managed to raise $1,706, a great start to our fundraising efforts. They included a Curley family that happened to be walking by but stopped to sell tickets for an entire shift. Well done everyone!!

We will sell more raffle tickets on both this coming Saturday, October 1, and on the Saturday after that (October 8).

However, we can only do it with your help! We need at least 3 people for each of the remaining shifts. Each shift is only 2 hours long. The raffle table will be on both Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and everything will be provided for you. Kids are especially good at selling tickets!

The Fall Fling on Friday, October 14, is the biggest fundraising event of the year. It accounts for about 40% of all the money we raise to support our arts, music and science programs. Selling tickets can also be a lot of fun and a good way to meet other Curley parents and kids. Prizes include an Apple iPad, a kid’s Fuji bike and xBox 360 so the tickets really sell themselves!

Please sign up online for the two remaining days selling tickets outside JP Licks, or click here to learn how you can contribute to the event in other ways. You may also email Jess Ormsby or Molly Mariano directly.

Support Our Partner Quest Adventures’ 5K Walk This Sunday

Heshan Berents-Weeramuni

A valued and long-time partner of the Curley K-8 School, Quest Adventures, is holding it’s Second Annual 5K Walk around Jamaica Pond this Sunday, October 2nd. Please consider participating to help raise money for this very worthy organization. Registration opens at 10 a.m. at the Jamaica Pond Boat House where Pond Street meets the Jamaicaway. The walk will begin at 11 a.m.

Quest Adventures has sponsored the Curley’s trips to St. Croix for several years. Each time, they have given a $5,000 seed grant and 7 months of direction and guidance in organizing, fundraising,  and executing the trips.

This past spring, eleven Curley middle school students, together with three teachers and Principal Jeffrey Slater, traveled to Discovery Grove, St. Croix to volunteer at the Christiansted Boys and Girls Club. They cleaned and painted the club building. They also worked with the children (above), helping with homework, teaching sports and leading team building activities and discussions on common teen issues.

You may also register for the Walk online or make a donation.

Volunteers Still Needed This Weekend!

Heshan Berents-Weeramuni

Volunteers are still needed to sell Fall Fling raffle tickets outside JP Licks, especially this weekend!

The annual Curley K-8 Fall Fling is our key fundraising event of the year – it brings in 40% of the money we raise to support music, art, and science at the Curley! This year’s Fall Fling is on October 14.

Volunteers are especially needed this weekend. JP Open Studios is happening this Saturday and Sunday, and so this is a great chance for us to sell a lot of tickets and garner interest because it is one of the busiest weekends of the year in JP. Raffle prizes include an iPad, a kid’s bike, and an xBox 360 so there will be a lot of interest.

We need a minimum of three people to sit at the table. Shift are only two hours long and all materials will be provided to you. It can actually be a lot of fun, especially if your kids get involved.

You can sign up online or email Jess Ormsby.

Thank you!

New Email Address for Transportation Problems and Questions

Heshan Berents-Weeramuni

To help parents reach the Transportation Department more effectively, BPS have set up a dedicated email address: schoolbus@bostonpublicschools.org. This address is monitored by the Transportation Department daily and can be used to let them know about problems. BPS has set it up to be just as effective as a phone call. When contacting the Transportation Department, please remember to put as much information as possible, including student ID number and pickup/drop-off details, in the email.

October 14 Fall Fling – Volunteers Needed!

Curley K-8 SPC

The annual Curley K-8 Fall Fling is our key fundraising event of the year – it brings in 40% of the money we raise to support music, art, and science at the Curley! This year’s event – on Friday, October 14 – is quickly approaching. Those of you who have attended in the past know how terrific the Fall Fling is, and it takes a lot of volunteers to pull it off. To make this year’s Fall Fling a success, we really need you to pitch in. Many of the things we need help with take two hours or less. Here are some easy ways you can help – please sign up!

Sell raffle tickets for a mere two hours outside of JP Licks this Saturday or on another upcoming weekend (prizes include an iPad, a kid’s bike, and an xBox 360):

  • Sign up online now!
  • Choose a two-hour block between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • We need three families for each slot – kids are welcome (and are often great at persuading folks to support the Curley!)

Sell raffle tickets on your own to your friends, family, neighbors, or colleagues:

  • Sign up online now!
  • Tell us how many books you would like.
  • We will get the tickets to you!

Make and donate a themed basket to be raffled off at the event:

  • Sign up online now!
  • Choose any basket theme you like – for adult or kids – and let us know

Help on the day of the event:

  • Sign up online to donate drinks and bake sale items, or to help set up or clean up!

There will also be an informal meeting on the Lower School playground on Wednesday, September 21 at 2:45pm (rain date is Thursday at the same time) for anyone who is free at that time and is interested in finding out how to best help with this event.

If you have any questions about volunteering at the Fall Fling, please contact Jess Ormsby. Thanks in advance for your help – we couldn’t pull this off without all of our terrific Curley volunteers!

Quick Curley K-8 Snippets

Heshan Berents-Weeramuni

A few updates and snippets of information:

  • If you drop off and pick up your child by car, please do not park on the school side of Pershing Street. The buses get blocked by parked cars, especially in the afternoon, so they are unable to leave to make room for other buses behind them, thus delaying everyone.
  • Ms. Ciardi and Ms. Gable need a few volunteers to organize the elementary book room (which is different from the library). Please email them by clicking on their names.
  • Important upcoming dates:
    • Open House and Parent Reception, this Thursday, September 22, from 5pm – 8pm.
    • The 5th Annual Fall Fling, our biggest fundraising event of the year, is on Friday, October 14.  Here’s how you can help!
    • The first Parent Council Meeting of the year (which is also a Pot Luck) will be on Tuesday, October 4, 6pm – 8pm, in the Lower School Cafeteria. We will hold elections for all parents on school- and district-wide positions, as well as for the all important Parent Council itself.
    • Curley moms, the 1st MFABS evening of the year is on Thursday, September 29 at Bella Luna.
  • The family contact list and class parent lists are being updated and will be posted very soon. Please contact Carrie Fletcher or Heshan Berents-Weeramuni and let us know who you are so we can give you the password.
  • Finally, if you need to unsubscribe from the mailing list or make suggestions about the website, please email Heshan Berents-Weeramuni, one of the parent webmasters.

Get A Curley Shirt. It’s As Easy As 1-2-3.

Heshan Berents-Weeramuni

Curley uniform shirts (white, collared shirts with the Curley logo) are now available for sale for K-8 students and adults.

They conform to the uniform policy and are $7 for children’s sizes and $12 for adult sizes. We have children’s sizes X-small, small, medium, large, X-large and adult sizes small, medium, large, X-large, and XX-large.

There are three ways to buy shirts:

  1. From Mary in the Lower School office between the hours of 9:30-1:30 (As many of you know, we lost the Upper School secretary in the budget cuts last year. Because of her added workload, Mary can only sell shirts between these hours);
  2. Send your child in with a check and the number/size of shirts requested and their teacher will give it to Mary during the school day. Checks should be made out the Curley K-8 SPC;
  3. Place your order through the website’s Curley Shop.
