Also if you see any of these teachers this week please thank them for all their hard work in leading this process: Kim Taylor Knight, Emanuela Alves, Meron Tefera and Jesse Cardoso.

10th Annual Curley K-8 Auction: Our biggest fundraiser of the year is almost here! The 10th Annual Silent Auction is only 2 days away! The live event will be on Tuesday, March 28th from 6 to 9pm at Canary Square in Jamaica Plain, but you don’t have to wait!

Want to come to the event but have no baby-sitter? The Acting Director of CASP, Ms. Mercado and her Staff are offering a fun night of activities for kid-sitting (ages 4+) from 5:30-9:30 on the night of the event at a low cost of $5 per child/per hour. A dinner is included to be served at 6 p.m. (dinner: cheese pizza, baby carrots, cherry tomatoes & water) Ms. Mercado at: Emercado@bostonpublicschools.org to reserve a spot. Please RSVP by Fri. 3/24. Computer Science Bus Route Efficiency Challenge: There is a computer science challenge event open to the public at District Hall in the Seaport District on Saturday, April 1st at 10:30am (registration and breakfast starting at 10am). We believe that some of our tech-minded students and staff may be interested in attending (please encourage them to RSVP here!). This event is the start of our first-ever Transportation Challenge — which you can learn more about on our website — that has two goals:
• Use computer science to improve our bus stop placement and bus routing (solving a variation of the traveling salesman problem).
• Using our more automated routes and community preferences, help us equitably and efficiently balance our school start times.
• This event has attracted a wide range of professional computer scientists (FedEx, Uber, Microsoft, and others), academic researchers from local universities (Harvard, MIT, Boston University, and others), and various college and graduate students. We believe that a particularly precocious BPS student may be able to solve the problem so encourage them to participate, and that this event may provide tangible examples of computer science in action.

IMPORTANT- Walk-In for a fair contract THIS FRIDAY at 7:45AM!

Noreen Power

Please come support our Curley Teachers tomorrow morning at the 493 Centre St. entrance at 7:45AM. They want to bring attention to the Boston Teachers Union, who is currently at a stand-still in negotiating their contract.

We are asking that you show up Friday at 7:45AM to walk in with us at around 8:00AM. We would like to take a picture with 100 of us there. It is highly likely that the Boston Globe will be stopping by as well, so the more people the better.

Let’s make it a joyous event as the Curley always does. If you’d like to bring anything, please do! We’ve had donuts, coffee, awesome balloons in the past. We’ll have plenty of signs!

NAEP Testing grades 4th and 8th: The Curley K-8 School will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on 3/8/2017 (8th grade) and 3/9/2017 (4th grade). NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students know and can do in various subjects. It is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics, within the U.S. Department of Education. NAEP is different from our state assessment because it provides a common measure of student achievement across the country. The results are released as The Nation’s Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents, policymakers, and the public.

Students at the Curley K-8 School are going take a mathematics or reading assessment. The assessment takes about 90 to 120 minutes and students might take a computer based or paper test. The results of the assessment are completely confidential (in accordance with the Confidential Information Protection provisions of Title V, Subtitle A, Public Law 107-347).

Parents with children in grades 4th and 8th received a letter informing them about the NAEP Assessment and other helpful information. It is important to note that the information collected is used for statistical purposes only. Students may be excused for any reason, are not required to complete the assessment, and may skip any question. While the assessment is voluntary, NAEP depends on student participation to help policymakers improve education. If parents do not want their children to participate, they are able to opt out. However, parents need to notify the school in writing by February 28, 2017.

ELT: Our school hours for next year will be 8:30am-3:10pm. We will continue to offer a before and after school program here as well.

Welcoming Statement: We want all Curley families to know that we are a safe and welcoming space for all. The diversity of our school is viewed as a strength and you are welcome no matter your religion, race, age, gender, sexual orientation, language, national origin or ability level. Please know that we CARE about ALL PEOPLE and you will always be safe and welcomed in our community.

we care about all people
