Bikes Not Bombs: Local JP nonprofit, Bikes Not Bombs (BNB), is hosting their 31st Annual Bike-A-Thon on Sunday, June 10th (rain date June 24th) which starts and ends at the field near the JP Stony Brook T Station. This bike ride for social change has 4 routes to choose from including a 10 mile family friendly route. In fact, you may recognize the Curley family members featured in this year’s Bike-A-Thon poster! All registered riders who meet their fundraising minimum enjoy free food, a t-shirt, ride support, and an after-party, all while making a real difference! To register to ride or to learn more, please follow this link: https://bikesnotbombs.org/bike-a-thon BNB’s mission is to promote environmental sustainability and social justice by using the bicycle as a vehicle for social change, and all fundraising goes directly to making Bikes Not Bombs’ local and international programs possible! One of those programs, Girls in Action, for girls only, is still accepting applications for their May 15th – June 15th after school program located nearby at 284 Amory Street in JP! Girls In Action (GIA) combines bicycle mechanics and riding and is a great way for girls aged 12-18 to learn new things, make friends, get active and earn a bike of their own! In addition to mechanics, GIA offers fitness, safety, and environmental activities, as well as weekly workshops or field trips! You might visit an urban farm, learn how to do henna tattoos, or do community service, all while meeting other cool girls and learning how to completely rebuild a bike. No experience in biking or mechanics is necessary to apply and every program graduate will ride away on her very own refurbished bicycle! For more information and to download an application, please check out https://bikesnotbombs.org/girls-in-action or email Jamie@bikesnotbombs.org
