Curley Boosterthon Fun Run: Your Feedback Wanted

boosterthon
This year, the Curley School Parent Council (SPC) decided to work with Boosterthon to organize a fun run. The goal was to raise more money from new sources, involve all of the students in the school in a fun, physical activity and reduce the burden on the few parents who are active in the SPC. We achieved these goals, netting approximately $18,000. Please feel free to share your thoughts on the program: Parent Survey in English

Boosterthon!

Noreen Power

Hi Curley Families!

Today we kicked off the Boosterthon program here at our school…this is our major fundraiser of the year! The students and staff are very excited to have the Boosterthon team on campus the next two weeks as we learn how to be true heroes though Castle Quest and to help our school!

This year, we are raising $25,000 for our school! So, we need your help…

Today, each student will be coming home with a pledge crown. This crown provides the steps for how to log onto funrun.com and register your student.

  • Student registration code: 112-177

Curley PNO

Be sure to check out the “Student Star Video.” This is a fun and easy way to let potential sponsors know that they can support our school – and your child will love being the star in their very own movie!

Thank you for your help!

Our goal is to identify best practices and help connect any and all in the community who would like to work toward enriching our outdoor environment.

So far, we have worked to:

  • Formalize teacher and parent engagement
  • Facilitate teachers’ access to garden beds
  • Spring clean the Outdoor Classroom
  • Inventory gardening supplies and needs
  • Engage BPS Facilities for support
  • Research external education/management services
  • Identify grant opportunities

Bikes Not Bombs: Local JP nonprofit, Bikes Not Bombs (BNB), is hosting their 31st Annual Bike-A-Thon on Sunday, June 10th (rain date June 24th) which starts and ends at the field near the JP Stony Brook T Station. This bike ride for social change has 4 routes to choose from including a 10 mile family friendly route. In fact, you may recognize the Curley family members featured in this year’s Bike-A-Thon poster!

All registered riders who meet their fundraising minimum enjoy free food, a t-shirt, ride support, and an after-party, all while making a real difference! To register to ride or to learn more, please follow this link: https://bikesnotbombs.org/bike-a-thon

BNB’s mission is to promote environmental sustainability and social justice by using the bicycle as a vehicle for social change, and all fundraising goes directly to making Bikes Not Bombs’ local and international programs possible! One of those programs, Girls in Action, for girls only, is still accepting applications for their May 15th – June 15th after school program located nearby at 284 Amory Street in JP! Girls In Action (GIA) combines bicycle mechanics and riding and is a great way for girls aged 12-18 to learn new things, make friends, get active and earn a bike of their own! In addition to mechanics, GIA offers fitness, safety, and environmental activities, as well as weekly workshops or field trips! You might visit an urban farm, learn how to do henna tattoos, or do community service, all while meeting other cool girls and learning how to completely rebuild a bike. No experience in biking or mechanics is necessary to apply and every program graduate will ride away on her very own refurbished bicycle! For more information and to download an application, please check out https://bikesnotbombs.org/girls-in-action or email Jamie@bikesnotbombs.org

Noreen Power

Top 10 reasons to attend the SPC meeting on May 9th, 6:00-7:30 pm

  1. Feel proud that you’re participating in your kid(s)’ school. #curleycares
  2. Meet other parents and bond over your shared inability to deal with all the “artwork” that comes home. (What? Is that just me?)
  3. Share your opinion on important school issues.
  4. Get updates on stuff like the library, health & wellness, and THE ‘80’s PROM.
  5. Pickles! Pizza! Microcuisine! (baby carrots)
  6. Learn about the featured topics: Types of assessment and Arts at the Curley
  7. Free pizza and childcare and pony rides* for your children!
  8. Bring up any issues that are important to you or ask any questions you’ve been dying to ask (e.g. Can parents join CAD?)
  9. Scope it out so you can decide if you want a position on next year’s SPC.
  10. Brush up on your Spanish. (Our meetings are bilingual./Nuestras reuniones son bilingües.)

And don’t miss our very last SPC meeting of the year, Friday, June 15th. It’ll be a potluck and includes our elections for next year’s council.
