4th Annual Silent Auction – Huge Success!

Curley K-8 SPC

Ready to Bid!

Friend, families, and supporters of JP’s Curley K-8 School turned out in full force to raise $10,000 at the school’s 4th Annual Silent Auction fundraiser on Tuesday, March 8.  Canary Square generously hosted the event, providing delicious appetizers and a warm, convivial atmosphere.  The bidding was competitive (perhaps even frenzied) on a range of fantastic silent auction items – including Red Sox/Yankees tickets, artwork, a week at a Newport vacation house, overflowing gourmet gift baskets, and gift certificates for everything from local classes to restaurants to personal training sessions.  The proceeds, which will go to support music, art, and science at the Curley K-8, are more critical than ever in this time of growing cuts in the BPS budget.  The Curley parents’ council offers its sincerest thanks to the many friends and members of the Curley community who helped make this evening such a success – and special thanks to Canary Square for being such a terrific community partner.

Q&A Session for Curley Advanced Work Class Program

Curley K-8 SPC

On Tuesday, February 8 at 7:30 a.m. the Curley K-8 will hold a Q&A session with our principals, AWC teachers (4th, 5th, and 6th grade), and some AWC parents. The session will run until approximately 8:20 a.m. and is aimed at families who are considering the Curley for AWC next year (both current Curley families and families who are considering the Curley as a transfer option.)

We understand that February 8 may not work for everyone; it is the only time where we could collect all of the folks we need to offer a valuable Q&A. We will also have current AWC parents who are willing to answer questions by phone or email, particularly if you are not able to attend this session. (NOTE: Current AWC parents – if you’re willing to attend this meeting to talk to parents considering AWC and haven’t talked to me yet, please email me and let me know – it is extremely helpful for people who are trying to figure out this process to talk to someone who’s been through it!)

Please sign up online if you plan to attend this session so that we get estimate on numbers. Thanks for your patience – the Curley parents and administrators are doing our best to respond to many, many questions that we’re getting about the AWC program!

WHEN: 7:30 – 8:20 a.m. on Tues., Feb. 8
WHERE: Curley K-8 Auditorium (use main entrance on Centre St.)
WHAT: Q&A with principal, 4th, 5th, and 6th AWC teachers, AWC parents.
WHO: Current or transfer families considering the Curley for AWC next year.

A number of people have asked how many seats are open at the Curley for transfers into 4th grade AWC. There are a total of 25 AWC seats at the Curley. The information I currently have is that 21 current Curley 3rd graders have received invitations to Advanced Work – we do not know if all 21 will accept the invitation, although we suspect that most will. I do not know yet whether the 3rd grade teachers will be recommending that any other students be placed into AWC based on portfolio work. For what it’s worth, my understanding is that only one such recommendation was made last year. So, our current best estimate is that there will be something in the range of four seats open for transfer students to attend 4th grade AWC at the Curley. I do not yet know the estimates for 5th grade AWC but will share that info when I can. – Carrie Fletcher

MFABS: Curley Moms’ Night Out

7:30pm – 10:30pm
Bella Luna/Milky Way

MFABS is back for 2011! Join us at Bella Luna/Milky Way(http://www.milkywayjp.com/) at 7:30 pm on Monday, January 24 2011 for a casual evening of beverages and mamaship. Arrive whenever you can(it’s a “soft” start-time), and leave whenever you need to. And get your trivia muscle warmed up: January’s MFABS will coincide with BellaLuna’s weekly Stump Trivia night. The game begins at 8:00, so if you want to sit and play, try to arrive as close to this time as you can. It does get crowded. (If you don’t want to play trivia, that’s fine, too!)

Our monthly MFABS get-togethers are a chance for mamas in the Curley K-8 community – and beyond – to get together for a drink and a chat. It’s just for fun; there are no kids, dads, or agendas other than to relax, share, vent, and otherwise take a load off our far-too-busy minds and souls. If you’re part of a two-mama household, may we suggest 1) a sitter, or 2) rock/paper/scissors. Please share this invite with any moms who might enjoy a night out!
