Library and Technology Campaign:

Our Library & Technology campaign raised over $22,000 so far! The School Parent Council and the Library/Technology Committee are asking for your support to ensure that Curley students are well prepared for the 21st century. A staffed, modern and well-stocked library is a key part of this goal. Our shared vision for the Curley Library includes both traditional and digital media: an updated collection of books to support our students’ literacy development and reading interests, and the technology and online resources to allow students to research, collaborate, and present information digitally. Please consider a tax-deductible donation in support of the Curley K-8’s Library and Technology Campaign. More details about the initiative and giving can be found on the school website http://www.curleyk8.com/library/

ACCESS Testing:

Starting this week through February break, all students designated as English Language Learners (ELL) will be assessed for their English Language Development Level (ELD). The ACCESS test is a state-mandated assessment. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have any further questions.

New Health and Wellness Policy:

The Curley K-8 Community has begun implementing a Celebration and Reward Policy focused on the health and wellness of our community. This policy uses tools for academic success to recognize important events, exceptional behavior and teamwork in place of food and candy. At the Curley K-8 the majority of celebrations (holidays, birthdays, end-of-school year etc.) will be recognized without food/candy in the classroom, please discuss with your student’s teacher how they will recognize birthdays. At the Curley K-8 exceptional behavior and/or teamwork will also be recognized without food/candy. This policy will be followed in CASP and other school sports/clubs. The one exception to this is the PACE program. Please click here for a detailed memo of this policy and thank you for your support to help take care of our community.

Curley winter gear update:

A big thank you to all those who have donated winter gear so far! It is much appreciated and being sent home with students every day. We still need more (coats, hats, mittens/gloves, boots, etc), especially as the days get colder. We can use all sizes, from 3t – adult. Donation boxes can be found in both the Upper and Lower School lobbies. If your child is in need of winter gear, please let his/her teacher know. Thanks for helping keep Curley kids warm this winter!

Lion King Performances:

Ms. Taylor Knight was the recipient of a district-wide donation of shoes, tights and bodysuits, which will help costume the Lion King cast. Thanks to BPS Arts Department (Myron, Allyssa and Dawn) and the Boston Dance Alliance. The Lion King performance dates have been announced:
School Shows
March 21 at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
March 22 at 9 a.m.
March 23 and 24th at 7 p.m. (family show)
Families are welcome to come to either performance.

Snow:

In preparation for the winter we would like to ask all families to talk with their children about throwing snow. We want all students to be safe as they enter and exit school and we are asking that all adults and students leave the snow on the ground during those times. We are also asking that families and students use the shoveled spaces to walk and do not walk through the snowy yard. This is to help assure that no one falls and gets hurt. Thank you!

Labeling Coats:

We are asking families to label their child’s coat on the inside tag. This way if the coat gets lost we can return it to the rightful owner. We have had many winter coats end up in the lost & found and we want to prevent this from continuing.

School Previews:

We are looking for family volunteers to support our upcoming School Previews. These are building tours for prospective families and Curley families help to lead and share information from a parent’s point of view. All families are welcome to participate and no prior experience is necessary (we will partner you up with others). The preview dates will take place on Friday, January 13th from 9am-1pm and Monday, January 23rd from 3pm-4pm. Please email Arusha Hollister (arusha_h@yahoo.com) or sign up on this Doodle poll: Curley Preview Tours

ELT:

BPS is returning to the idea of expanding the school day for our students in K-8. We will be adding 40 minutes to our day for school year 2017-2018. Wow! We’ve ALMOST reached our 2016 goal to BRING BACK OUR LIBRARY at the Curley K8! – *ONE DAY* LEFT – We Can Do It!

Curley K-8 SPC

THANK YOU! … What an incredible community we have! — Curley Families and friends have raised nearly $22,000 in December and have only $3,200 remaining to reach our goal before year end… This means we have *ONE DAY* LEFT to raise $3,200 in 2016. TOGETHER, WE CAN DO THIS!

Reading Is Fundamental. The Curley K8 School is dedicated to bringing back our library as soon as possible to ensure our 925+ students have equitable access to books and a computer lab within the Library at our school. Please help make it happen!

As you finalize your 2016, tax-deductible year-end giving, please consider a donation of *ANY* amount to help bring back the Curley School Library. The Friends of the Curley is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization. If you are traveling or with Loved ones, maybe ask if they’d be interested? We greatly appreciate you sharing this with anyone you think may support this important effort.

Ways to contribute:

Click Paypal to give online now;
send in cash/check (payable to: Friends of the Curley) to your child’s teacher; or
mail in to: Curley K-8 School SPC, 40 Pershing Rd., Jamaica Plain, MA 02130 Attn: Curley SPC Library.
*A receipt for your tax-deductible/charitable donation will be emailed to you

We cannot thank you enough for your support in bringing back the Curley School Library for our students!

HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!
May 2017 bring Peace and Literacy for all!

– – – – – –
(please read below for more details in our original Annual Appeal letter)

Dear Families and Friends of the Curley K-8 School,

As we enter the holiday season, we are asking for your support to ensure that the 925+ students at the Curley are well-prepared for the 21st century. A modern, well-stocked and staffed library is a key part of this vision.

Five years ago, the school’s two libraries were closed due to budget cuts. In 2015, a passionate group of parents and teachers began dedicating themselves to revitalizing and reopening one library to serve the entire Curley K-8 community. We are deeply committed to making a modern library the heart and soul of our wonderfully diverse community and school, a place where students and teachers will be excited to explore and learn together. Studies show that staffed school libraries are critical to student academic success, and are linked to significantly higher literacy scores regardless of socioeconomic status.

Our vision for the Curley Library includes both traditional and digital media: an updated collection of books to support our students’ literacy development and personal reading interests, and the technology and online resources to allow students to research, collaborate, and present information in line with digital expectations of this generation of learners.

As 2016 comes to an end, we kindly ask that you consider a tax-deductible donation in support of the Curley K-8’s Library and Technology Campaign.

Our goal is to raise $70,000 in 3 Phases as follows:
Phase I: $25,000 for technology, including secure Chromebook carts, library computers, a scanner, and other library technology
Phase II: $25,000 for renovations, including room updates and furnishings
Phase III: $20,000 for books and cataloging *Ready to Open!*

Please help us reach our phase I Goal of $25,000 for Technology by Year-End — It’s a lofty Goal, but we think working together, we can make it happen!

Last December, with your generous help, we were able to fund four new laptop carts, dramatically increasing critical access to computers for 3rd-8th graders who will be taking placement tests on computers. We’re hoping to provide even more immediate access with this fundraiser.

    Gifts of ANY amount help

Please forward this message to family, friends, colleagues, and any other potential supporters and don’t forget to ask if your company matches charitable donations – we are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Here are letters & more information you can forward:

Curley Winter Gear Update
curley_coatdrive_blog-03A big thank you to all those who have donated winter gear so far!

Health and Wellness

Stay tuned for a full list of stores and the exact timeframe (most likely 3pm-8pm). If you have questions, please email or call Leah Barcan: lbarcan@gmail.com/617-599-0592.

WIT-Curley Partnership Presentation: This Tuesday (Nov 29)
Wellness in the Schools (WITs) is a national non-profit that inspires healthy eating, environmental awareness, and fitness as a way of life for kids in public schools. Through meaningful public-private partnerships, they work with schools to provide healthy, scratch-cooked meals, active recess periods, and fitness and nutrition education. Their partnership approach drives systemic, long-term change, shifting the entire culture of schools. In November, WITs completed a Needs Assessment of the Curley by touring the facility and interviewing students, staff, and district personnel. The Needs Assessment is used to determine the strengths and needs of our school.

WITs have compiled the results of the Needs Assessment and would like to present this report to the community on Tuesday, Nov. 29 (3-5 pm). In order to facilitate school improvement, WITs would like for the Curley community to vote on the top three areas of change based on the report. Please join us to learn more about the outcome of the Needs Assessment and to vote on priority items. Babysitting will be available.

Thank You Note, and an Invitation

Noreen Power

Please see this message from Ms. Wessen, Ms. Stokes, Ms. Rodriquez, and Ms. Griffith:

GoFundMe: Thank You for the Lab Tables!

I want to once again, thank you for your generous donation to the students of the Curley K-8th School. Your donation impacted all of our middle school science classrooms (Ms. Stoke’s and Ms. Rodriquez’s class) and one elementary science class (Ms. Griffith).

It has provided students with new lab tables in which both students and teachers do not have to worry about broken glassware and spilled chemicals. The triple beam balances and digital scales has been fantastic for our mass lab where student lean how to accurately measure mass and weight. This is one of the first steps of conducting an accurate experiment as measurement is one of the most crucial piece of conducting any experiment.

As you can see in our pictures, your donation goes to giving us fun hands on experiments. When looking at the pictures, don’t just look at the supplies but look at the expression on our students’ faces-filled with excitement, curiosity, and an eagerness to learn. It has brought pride, color, and life into our classroom.

Thank you again for your generosity.
Ms. Wessen, Ms. Stokes, Ms. Rodriquez, and Ms. Griffith

Also, We wanted to personally invite parents to hear about the results of the WITS Needs Assessment. In Nov, the team came out and conducted interviews, toured the facility, and talked to district personnel to see what our strengths are as a school and what we needed to change. The results are in and we wanted to invite you guys to come here about it. They will present and ask that the school and the community decide on 3 areas of priorities that we would want to change for 2016-17.
