It’s School Preview Time Again!!

Arusha Hollister

It’s school preview time again when prospective families come to tour the Curley and we could use your help!

For many years, parents have played a significant part in showing the school to other parents, and the Curley is noted for our level of parent participation at these tours. Many of you may remember your own tour of the Curley. Now as a member of the Curley community we would love your help as tour guides.

New families are encouraged to participate as you give the most valuable feedback to incoming parents. Don’t worry if you feel like you don’t know the school yet – we’ll pair you up with a parent who has done tours in the past.

BPS is kicking off the preview season with a School Showcase on
on Saturday, December 3rd from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

During this time the Curley school, as well as all other elementary schools will be open for families to tour. We could use your help on this day, even if you can only come for part of the four hours. This is when lots of families will be visiting.

We also need help leading tours:
Friday, December 9th, 9am-10am
Friday, January 13th, 9am-10am
Monday, January 23rd, 3pm-4pm

If you are able to help out leading tours even one day that would be really helpful.
Please sign up on the doodle poll: Click Here

Please include your email address in the comments section or you can e-mail me, Arusha Hollister, directly at arusha_h@yahoo.com to give me your e-mail or to get more information about leading tours.
We greatly appreciate any help you can give.

WIT-Curley Partnership
Wellness in the Schools (WITs) is a national non-profit that inspires healthy eating, environmental awareness, and fitness as a way of life for kids in public schools. Through meaningful public-private partnerships, they work with schools to provide healthy, scratch-cooked meals, active recess periods, and fitness and nutrition education. Their partnership approach drives systemic, long-term change, shifting the entire culture of schools.

In November, WITs completed a Needs Assessment of the Curley by touring the facility and interviewing students, staff, and district personnel. The Needs Assessment is used to determine the strengths and needs of our school. WITs have compiled the results of the Needs Assessment and would like to present this report to the community on Tuesday, Nov. 29 (3-5 pm). In order to facilitate school improvement, WITs would like for the Curley community to vote on the top three areas of change based on the report. CASP: Focusing on Homework

Erika Mercado

CASP Homework Block

Director Torri Canada knows how important homework can be to a student’s success. In CASP the goal is to provide a quality homework block that puts students in a position to succeed. CASP kids receive support daily from our CASP staff, as well as the resources to work independently on their homework. With the help of lead teachers and the City Year Corp Members, students can complete homework in a timely manner with ease.

casp3

What’s New?

The first major addition this year is to focus on connecting homeroom teachers with the after school program. Mr. Petmezis, a current 3rd grade educator at the Curley, is communicating with teachers in grades 3 through 5 to help the program best support each child. He is gathering data, monitoring adult to student ratios, providing academic strategies for CASP staff, and checking with homeroom teachers for homework completion. Having a veteran teacher on staff allows the after school program to identify and support the students that will benefit from additional academic support. Homeroom teachers are excited to have a proactive point person that knows the school and students well.

“We want to help every child succeed in a timely manner.” said Mr. Petmezis in an email. “A focused homework block means more time for enrichment and more fun for kids!”

Students are offered activities and programs starting at 3:30 each day. If they need additional time to complete homework or reading, they are encouraged to do so before beginning enrichment.

casp4

Our Homework Guide Policy

Here at CASP we take pride in the help and support we give to our students with their homework. CASP does not do the homework for its students, nor does the staff give answers to the students. We serve as guides to help the students complete their homework assignments.

Wrong answers are alright. Wrong answers help the students’ teacher know what they need to work on or review with their students. This also extends to misspelled words and concepts.
Understanding. Our goal is to help students understand difficult to learn concepts. This does sometimes mean a student may not finish their homework while at CASP, but an understanding of the overall theme of the concept from the homework was reached or strived for. This means that the student should have a much simpler time completing their assignments.
Consistency. ‘While wrong answers are alright, we look for a consistency in the wrong or right answers. The help is tailored to the consistency of the student’s answers.
Personal Attention. We try to give individual attention to the students who seem to struggle more and may not be able to answer some or all of the homework problems. This means personally working with them to help them try to understand the concept their teacher is trying to emphasize or get across.

The Future

Ms. Canada is proud of her program’s success, but is always looking for new ways to help the students and program grow. She believes CASP can do even more to support students in homework and academics. “I am currently in the process of bringing in additional tutors from Northeastern University.” she explained to her staff this week. In addition, she has partnered with programs to help build self-confidence and to encourage interest in science and technology.

casp5

Meet Our Homework Team

Director Torri Canada is loving her 6th year as leader and founder of the Curley After School Program. She wants to thank Principal Grassa and the Administration team, and teachers and families of the Curley for their continued support. Mr. Petmezis, Curley teacher, oversees the success of homework for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders during after school. Ms. Craman, Curley teacher, oversees the success of homework for the 1st, and 2nd graders during after school. Lead teachers during after school, Ms. Pina and Ms. Brown, Mr. Downie, Mr. Guerrero, and Ms. Butler, and our City Corp members are instrumental and passionate about students homework completion each day. City Year participates in trainings to support students academically. In addition, City Year can check in with CASP staff for specific strategies.

We provide new, interesting books at a variety of levels for each grade. Students can now complete their reading and logs during the homework block.

Sole Train Shout Out!
Shout out to all Curley students, staff, families and alumnae who came out on Saturday for the Sole Train 5k! It was great to see so many people from our community gathering at Jamaica Pond pushing ourselves to go the distance!

Please join us for the October SPC meeting on Wednesday, October 19th from 8:45am-10:00am. All families are encouraged to attend.

SPC Election Day Bake Sale
The SPC Election Day Bake Sale raises money for Curley Arts and Programing. Sell delicious baked goods to your fellow citizens, while watching democracy in action. This is a one day event that needs volunteers to sell goods on Election Day, November 8th, so pair up with a friend, or make a new friend while helping out. Also we need volunteers to donate items, such as sandwiches, cakes, cookies, coffee, apple cider, or any other item. Lets join together on this historic day and support our school. Click HERE to volunteer.

8th Grade High School Information Night
We invite all 8th Grade Parents and Families to attend our “High School Information Night” on Thursday, November 3rd at 5:30-7:30pm. Stop by the Curley to learn about the high school application process and discover a variety of high school options. Dinner and Childcare will be provided. A RSVP form for this event was distributed today. If you plan to attend, please have your child return the RSVP form to their homeroom teacher by Friday, October 22nd.

Curley School Musical
Do you have a 3rd-5th grade student who likes to act, sing or dance?  Rehearsals for “The Lion King” will begin soon and students who are interested are invited to come to the first meeting, which will be Monday, October 24th from 3pm-4:30pm in the auditorium. To see more about the program visit Disney Musicals in Schools or talk to Ms. Taylor Knight (ktaylorknight@bostonpublicschools.org) or Ms. Alves (evarela@bostonpublicschools.org).

Curley Shares
Thursday marks the start of our Curley Shares for the school year. All students will attend an assembly with their buddy classrooms and some students will be recognized for CARING since school started. Be sure to ask your child about the experience and know that these will occur monthly moving forward.

Halloween
The Curley K-8 will not have a Halloween celebration during the school day. As a community we are focused on health and wellness and therefore we ask that all candy remain at home. We are also asking that students leave all costumes, masks and face painting at home as well. Thank you in advance for your support around this matter.

Tenacity
Tenacity has a few open spots remaining for 6th grade students at the Curley School. Our free after-school program combines academic support with a daily tennis and fitness program, along with life skills, field trips, and a unique social community. Come join our program! For more information, including registration paperwork, please feel free to visit Room 202 or contact Coach Payne 231-881-0633.

Help Support Our Teachers’ Fundraising Efforts!

Kate Davis

In addition to planning lessons and teaching, did you know that many of our teachers are also some of our school’s busiest fund-raisers? Currently, Curley K8 School teachers have over 10 active projects listed HERE on DonorsChoose and they need our support to get them funded. Many of the projects currently listed are in support of our early elementary inclusion and PACE classrooms. Our newest ESL teacher and middle school “Destination Imagination” teacher are also trying to make sure their students have the materials they need to be successful.

Over the years, Curley teachers have posted and successfully funded close to $130,000 in small, high-impact classroom and grade-level projects on DonorsChoose.org and other fundraising sites. These targeted fund-raising efforts help provide important day-to-day materials and experiences directly to students within the classroom.

Please spread the word to help our teachers get the resources that will help make your child’s time at school even more engaging, dynamic, and enriching. Thank you!
