The 10th Annual Curley K-8 Fall Fling

This year our Fall Fling is Friday, October 14th from 5:30 – 8:00PM.
This is a fabulous family event and fundraiser with food, fun activities, a raffle with major prizes and a DJ! All families are invited to attend for a fun evening for adults and children. Parent volunteers play an essential role in making this a great event for our school community. Please see links below to sign up to volunteer. TerraNova Testing for Grades 3-5
Students in grades 3-5 will be taking the TerraNova assessment over the next two weeks. The window for TerraNova Testing opens Monday, October 2 through Wednesday, October 12, 2016. Any questions regarding the TerraNova Test please contact your child’s teacher.

Buddy Day at the Curley
This Friday, October 14th is Buddy Day at the Curley! This Friday is when Buddy classes meet for the first time and get to know more about one another. Buddy classes is a tradition started last year as a way for older Curley students to meet with and mentor younger Curley students – teaching them about Curley Cares and engaging in activities that support caring about ourselves, each other, and our school.

Tenacity
Tenacity has a few open spots remaining for 6th grade students at the Curley School. Our free after-school program combines academic support with a daily tennis and fitness program, along with life skills, field trips, and a unique social community. Come join our program! Sole Train

Sole Train is a noncompetitive running club that many of our middle school students participate in twice per week. They are hosting a fundraiser, Sole Train 5K walk/run on October 15th at Jamaica Pond. They are partnering with the Boston Police Department and Police Activity League and there will be free breakfast, ice cream, a kids fun run and music. It’s a fabulous morning and we encourage you all to come out. For information click HERE.

Please keep in mind that the doors open at 8:15am and the official school day begins promptly at 8:30am. Please make sure to have your child arrive on time for the start of the day. Dismissal begins at 2:25pm. We are asking all families to remain outside at dismissal and not to release their child from school after 1:45pm. All arrival and dismissal information is found here.

Fall Fling is next Friday evening October 14th from 5:30-8!!!

Don’t miss out on a great night at the Curley! We hope you will join us on October 14th for our 10th Annual Fall Fling. This much anticipated community event is the Curley’s family-friendly fundraiser of the year!

Please look out for the raffle tickets coming home with your child this week and refer to the included instructions to sell tickets and help us to raise money to fund important enrichment programs at our school. Please email Jessica London-Rand at jlondonrand@gmail.com if you would like additional raffle tickets to sell or if you have any questions.

Wanting to help, but you’re not sure how?

Feeling creative? Contribute a themed basket to be raffled off in our basket raffle. A few examples are an art supply basket, dress up basket, kitchen and cooking accessories baskets, family game night basket, etc. Please feel free to contact Jessica London-Rand at jlondonrand@gmail.com if you would like more ideas!

Donate a baked good or some water/juice boxes for the event. Just bring them when you arrive for the event on Friday.

Starting Monday, September 26, 2016 Elaine Cronin will meet sibling walkers at the glass case located on the first floor in the lower school.  Please send her (ecronin2@bostonpublicschools.org) the names of the students who will be meeting their K1, K2 and first grade siblings. The K1, K2 and grade 1 students should continue to go out with their grade levels. Parents will be able to meet their children from Pershing Rd. pick-up locations. This option is only for children who have a sibling being dismissed as walkers from the lower school. They will then proceed out the front door and stand against the wall to the left.

Nurse Regan (mregan@bostonpublicschools.org) and Nurse Pumphret (apumphret@bostonpublicschools.org) are here to support our whole community. “Welcome to another school year. We hope everyone had a restful and healthy summer. We would like to remind parents to please send a copy of your child’s most recent physical exam and immunizations to school. If your child experienced any health changes over the summer or if your child has been diagnosed with a medical condition that the school nurse’s should be aware of, please call us at 617-635-8239. Also, if your child will require medication in school (including epipens and asthma inhalers), the medication must be brought into school in the original prescription box or bottle with the child’s name on it. We also require a medication order from your child’s pediatrician. The order should be dated for this school year and signed by the physician and parent. Our fax number is 617-635-8244.”

Sole Train 5K Run/Walk at Jamaica Pond, Saturday Oct 15th

Sole Train: Boston Runs Together
is a community-building and mentoring program that
uses running as a vehicle for young people to deconstruct
the impossible as they set and achieve previously
unimaginable goals. By building a supportive community
of caring peers and adults, Sole Train champions young
people as they realize their capacity for greatness.

The Curley K-8 is a proud member of the Sole Train community. Our 6th, 7th and 8th graders have the opportunity to train and run in the Race to Remember in May (5 mile or half marathon).

There will be free breakfast, ice cream, kids fun run and music. All proceeds go to support the amazing youth in Sole Train!

Curley School Supplies Grades 3, 4, and 5

Wondering where your 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader got their binders, notebooks, and folders this year?

The Curley School has a new initiative to partner with “You” and purchase school supplies for grade 3, 4, and 5. Buying school supplies is a lot of work and money, but the Curley wants its students to start the year off right. If your child is in grades 3, 4, or 5, please send in $20 to their teachers to cover the cost of their binders, notebooks, and folders. Checks can be made to: Curley k-8 School. Send an extra $20 and sponsor another child’s school supplies.

Red Jacket Weekend
Thank you to all the families who came out to support City Year during Red Jacket Weekend! We look forward to welcoming students tomorrow and seeing the updates around the building thanks to our volunteers. A special THANK YOU to City Year Boston for being our partners and choosing us for this annual project!

Keep it Clean, Curley!
Our new school climate campaign will align with Caring About Our School. Thanks to the some Curley Families and the Playing Field Committee we have purchased 7 new trash barrels that are placed around the property. We will be teaching students about the importance of cleaning up litter as well as how to clean up after themselves. More information regarding this initiative will follow in the coming weeks.

BPS is hosting a forum titled: Tackling Racism in the Boston Public Schools. This will take place at the Bruce C. Bolling Building from 5:30pm-8pm on Thursday, September 22nd. You can RSVP HERE.

Last year Curley Art teachers in collaboration with our School Climate Team led an art competition to design a new Curley t-shirt for this school year. There were 936 submissions and only one winner! Congrats to Warren Yang in Grade 1 for being chosen and for helping us to create a new school shirt! Watch this video to see the student work submitted by our students and finalists.

Applying to Exam Schools

Hello Curley Parents,

The ISEE Registration Form, required for all students who are considering applying to a BPS Exam school, have been distributed to the 6th and 8th graders. Please encourage your child to return the form to Ms. Hins (6th grade) or Mr. Melzer (8th grade) as soon as possible, but no later than Tuesday, September 20th.

Please note, special accommodation testing is available for students who are unable to take the ISEE under standard conditions because of a documented learning difference or language ability. Special accommodation testing will be held at Boston Latin School only.

If you plan to request special accommodations for the ISEE, please make sure to select the Boston Latin School – Special Accommodations test center.

IMPORTANT DATES:

  • September 20, 2016 Curley Deadline for Registration forms returned to Ms. Hins (6th) and Mr. Melzer (8th)

Kindergarten Starts!
Tomorrow is the first day of Kindergarten! We are excited to welcome our youngest students. For the first week of school teachers will meet families outside on Pershing Rd. Having parents remain outside on first week helps students to transition into their new school setting. Starting Monday, September 19th families can walk their child to class starting at 8:15am.

Health and Wellness
We are pleased to invite you to join the Health and Wellness Committee. Our first meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 13th from 7:30-8:15am. We will meet in the Guidance Office located in the Upper School, room 203. At this first meeting, we will introduce ourselves and review the purpose and general goals of the committee. Please come join us on Tuesday, and every first Tuesday of the month.

Curley School Supplies for Grades 3, 4, and 5

School Supplies for Grades 3, 4 , and 5 have arrived and are in your child’s classroom. The Curley School wants its students to be prepared, and this year Curley has partnered with “You” to buy note books, binders and folders for grades 3, 4, and 5. Supplies are in their classrooms and ready for the first day of school. If your child is attending grade 3, 4, or 5, please send $20.00 to their teacher to help pay for your child’s binders, note books, and folders. Give an extra $20.00 and sponsor another student’s supplies. Send cash or checks made to: Curley K-8 School

This is an exciting new initiative that saves “You” time and money. Teachers will still need additional supplies for their rooms, so please look for letters from your child’s teacher, and visit their DonorChoose Campaigns.
